Physical Education

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District is proud to offer an outstanding elementary physical education program for students in first through sixth grade. The program is taught by credentialed specialists with the assistance of trained aides. Together they are assigned to several district elementary schools and teach specifically structured lessons that are developmentally appropriate in skill development, wellness concepts, basic anatomy, character education, and physical fitness. Students may be given quizzes, tests, homework, or projects on this material.

Program Overview

The elementary physical education program is based on the California State Framework. It is designed to provide experiences in movement that enhance the physical, mental and social/emotional well-being of every student, including special education students and English-language learners. The goals of the program are:

  • Movement Skill and Knowledge: Every child is provided with the opportunity to explore, practice and master movement skills and knowledge appropriate for their developmental level. The selected activities provide the basis for learning and analyzing purposeful movement.
  • Self-Image and Personal Development: Students are encouraged to be confident risk takers, realistic goal setters, and evaluators of personal abilities. The understanding of how they move and why they move contributes to the development of unique movers who understands his/her own ability and appreciates the abilities of others.
  • Social Development: Activities are designed to help students develop self-control, leadership skills, and cooperative behaviors.
